Ted Cruz has scored what is perhaps the most coveted endorsement in South Carolina, that of 3rd District Congressman Jeff Duncan.
Duncan, who was elected to Congress in 2010 on a wave of tea party support, has become one of the biggest heroes of conservatives not only in South Carolina, but nationally as well.
Duncan is a champion of Second Amendment rights and is a member of the House Liberty Caucus. Duncan became a true rock start among conservatives when he voted against John Boehner for reelection as Speaker of the House in January 2015. Duncan is known for fiscal thriftiness, and has even returned money from his Congressional office yearly budget which he did not spend.
Over the years Duncan has also become known as one of the state’s top kingmakers, and his events such as annual Faith and Freedom Rally and annual BBQ have grown into sell out events. His Faith and Freedom Rally in particular boasted attendees from 23 states packing out the Peace Center in Greenville last in 2015, as well as having most presidential candidates and other nationally renowned speakers, as well as drawing a mass of national media coverage.
Cruz and Duncan have long been close allies in Congress, pushing for things like the repeal of Obamacare and Second Amendment rights.
According to The State, Duncan will officially make his endorsement on Tuesday at a big Cruz rally in Anderson, the day after the Iowa caucus where Cruz is favored to win due to a strong ground game and majority support from the state’s heavy evangelical voter base.
