The momentum for Ted Cruz in the GOP presidential primary race has gotten another big boost today as he has scored a major endorsement in Iowa.
Steve Deace, conservative talk show host, author, and columnist announced his endorsement of Cruz on his radio show this afternoon. Deace is a contributor for the Washington Times and Conservative review .com as well as other sites, and is also author of Rules for Patriots and A Nefarious Plot.
Deace is considered as one of three major conservative kingmakers in Iowa, along with Bob Vander Plaats and Congressman Steve King. Cruz seems likely to also score the endorsement of Congressman King as it was recently announced that King’s son is now working for one of the Super PACs supporting Cruz.
Just after making his endorsement, Deace posted the following statement, “Ted Cruz presents exactly what we’ve been waiting for, an end to the Washington Cartel’s false choice between our principles and electability. No one can question Ted’s courage of conviction and his commitment to our principles. But he’s also raised the resources, and put the sort of national campaign together it takes to actually defeat the GOP establishment for the nomination. This makes him our best chance to offer the American people a real choice and not an echo for a change, and that’s why he has earned our support.”
Deace said that he and his wife seriously considered several candidates in the strong GOP field, but that their decision ultimately came down to three major factors:
1: “Cruz is the one candidate who never looked the other way when conservatives sold us out. It is one thing to call out the left, but when Cruz stood up to McConnell on the Senate floor and called him out, that was a Gettysburg moment.”
2: Electability, Cruz is a full spectrum conservative. Deace said, “We cannot coalesce our base unless our candidate is a full spectrum conservative. We need a candidate that can walk and chew gum at the same time.” Deace also cited that Cruz has raised more hard money than any GOP candidate in the race, and second only to Bush in PAC money. Deace added, “Cruz has earned his support. We haven’t had a conservative candidate as credible since Reagan.”
3: He must be able to lead once elected. “Cruz has proven time and again that he can and will lead.”
In addition to Deace’s endorsement, Cruz seems to have had everything breaking his way since the first candidate’s debate. In the two weeks since the debate, Cruz was declared by many pundits as a winner of the debate, received over $1 million in donations during the first 100 hours after the debate, as well as seeing a solid rise in most post-debate polls. Additionally, Cruz staged a 7 states in 7 days bus tour across the south where he saw crowds of enthusiastic supporters from 400 to 2,500 at every stop on the tour. Cruz also recently scored the endorsement of Georgia’s largest prolife organization, Georgia Right to Life’s Political Action Committee. And finally, Cruz was moved up to top tier status on Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
A recent Boston Herald Iowa poll shows Cruz as having risen to 9% and in a statistical 5-way tie for 2nd place, with Cruz having increased while most of his top competitors are seeing a decrease or staying stagnate. Deace’s endorsement should positively affect Cruz’s support among Iowa conservatives, as well as having some affect nationally due to his national radio and column following. The latest Fox News national poll places Cruz at 10% and in 3rd place among the 17 GOP candidates.
